MG has unveiled the next chapter in the story of one of Britain’s most significant modern electric cars, announcing the all-new MG4 EV Urban alongside a comprehensively updated 2026 MG4 EV line-up. With prices starting from £23,495, MG is doubling down on the formula that made the MG4 one of the UK’s most successful electric vehicles: competitive pricing, strong real-world usability and a focus on making EV ownership accessible to a mass audience rather than a niche few .
The MG4 EV has been a pivotal model for the brand since its launch in 2022, helping MG re-establish itself as a serious force in the UK new car market. Nearly 50,000 units have been sold domestically, and the car has amassed more than 50 awards and major recommendations, underlining its broad appeal across private buyers and fleet customers alike. Now, with the introduction of the MG4 EV Urban and a significantly revised core range, MG is aiming to reinforce that momentum at a time when competition in the electric hatchback segment is intensifying rapidly.
MG4 EV Urban: expanding access to electric motoring
The headline news is the debut of the MG4 EV Urban, a new sub-range designed to offer what MG describes as “family-sized” electric motoring at an entry price that undercuts many rivals. Positioned as a spacious, practical and highly affordable EV, the MG4 EV Urban launches with three variants.
The line-up begins with the Comfort Standard Range, priced from £23,495, followed by the Comfort Long Range at £25,495. Sitting at the top of the Urban range is the Premium Long Range, which comes in at £27,995 and adds a more generous equipment specification. While MG has not detailed full technical specifications in the announcement, the emphasis is firmly on value, interior space and everyday usability rather than outright performance.
MG’s strategy with the Urban appears clear: to broaden the MG4’s appeal to buyers who may be considering their first electric vehicle, particularly those stepping out of petrol or diesel hatchbacks in the supermini and lower family car classes. In a market where EV prices remain a key barrier to adoption, MG is positioning the Urban as proof that fully electric family transport does not have to command a premium.
David Allison, MG UK’s Director of Product and Planning, said the new model reinforces the brand’s core mission. He described the MG4 EV as a car that “helped make EV ownership possible for the many rather than the few,” adding that the new Urban variant “reconfirms our brand’s ability to make EV ownership ever-more accessible” .
A comprehensive upgrade for the 2026 MG4 EV
Alongside the new Urban, MG has also revealed significant updates for the main MG4 EV range for the 2026 model year. Rather than a minor facelift, the changes are framed as a substantial step forward in technology, interior quality, driving engagement and, crucially, electric range.
The revised MG4 EV range now starts with the Premium Long Range, priced from £29,995. Notably, this represents a £2,750 price reduction compared with the outgoing equivalent model, an aggressive move that reflects both MG’s value-led positioning and the growing price pressure across the EV market.

Above this sits the new Premium Extended Range, priced from £32,995. This version offers a WLTP combined range of up to 338 miles on a single charge, compared to the 323 miles of the original MG4 Extended Range, placing it among the longest-range electric cars available in the UK at its price point. MG claims this makes it one of the lowest-priced new cars on sale with such a high official driving range, a metric that continues to resonate strongly with UK buyers concerned about charging infrastructure and long-distance usability.
MG has placed particular emphasis on improvements to the cabin, promising enhanced materials and a more premium feel compared with earlier iterations of the MG4. While the brand has not released detailed images or specifications alongside the announcement, the focus on perceived quality suggests MG is responding directly to feedback from customers and reviewers who praised the original MG4’s driving dynamics and value, but saw room for improvement in interior finish.
XPOWER remains the performance flagship
At the top of the MG4 EV range remains the dual-motor XPOWER, priced at £33,995. With a quoted output of 320 kW, the all-wheel-drive hot hatch continues to be positioned as a performance outlier not just within MG’s own line-up, but across the wider UK new car market.

MG claims the XPOWER remains “pound for pound the fastest accelerating car you can buy in the UK”, a bold statement that underlines the company’s desire to combine affordability with genuine performance credentials. The continued presence of the XPOWER also demonstrates that MG sees the MG4 platform as versatile enough to cater for both cost-conscious family buyers and enthusiasts seeking high-output electric performance.
Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director at MG UK, said the original MG4 EV “put MG back on the motoring map”, and stressed that the updated range retains and enhances the car’s core driving characteristics while introducing “a comprehensive range of new technologies for an even more impressive experience” .
Pricing and positioning in a crowded EV market
The revised MG4 line-up arrives at a time when the UK electric hatchback segment is becoming increasingly competitive. Established rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born now face pressure from a growing wave of Chinese-backed brands and value-oriented manufacturers, many of whom are targeting similar price points.
MG’s approach is to compete aggressively on cost while maintaining a broad model range that allows customers to scale up from entry-level affordability to high-performance specification within the same nameplate. From the £23,495 MG4 EV Urban Comfort Standard Range to the £33,995 XPOWER, the MG4 family now spans more than £10,000, offering one of the widest spreads of choice in its class.
Importantly, both the MG4 EV Urban and the updated MG4 EV models continue to be backed by MG’s 7-year/80,000-mile warranty in the UK, a key differentiator that has played a significant role in building consumer confidence in the brand’s electric offerings. Combined with an extensive national dealer network, MG is seeking to reassure buyers who may be cautious about long-term ownership of newer EV brands.
Reinforcing MG’s modern identity
The launch of the MG4 EV Urban and the refreshed MG4 EV range also speaks to MG’s evolving identity in the European market. While the brand’s heritage is rooted in British sports cars, its modern resurgence has been driven largely by practical, accessible electrified vehicles designed for everyday use.
MG now operates in 34 European countries with around 1,300 dealer partners, and its emphasis on long warranties and aggressive pricing has helped it gain traction in markets where EV adoption is accelerating but affordability remains a concern. The MG4, in particular, has become a symbol of that strategy, combining contemporary styling with a focus on real-world value.
With the 2026 updates, MG appears determined not to rest on the MG4’s early success. Instead, it is using the model as a platform to push further into the mainstream, broadening its appeal while sharpening its competitiveness on range, quality and price.
As the UK’s electric car market continues to mature, the MG4 EV Urban and updated MG4 EV range are likely to play a significant role in shaping buyer expectations of what an affordable electric hatchback can deliver. For MG, the message is clear: the MG4 is no longer just a disruptive newcomer, but a core product that the brand intends to evolve aggressively as electric motoring becomes the norm rather than the exception.
