Mercedes-Benz has officially opened the order books for its new all-electric GLC in the United Kingdom, signalling a significant new chapter for the brand's popular mid-size SUV, and a major upgrade on the EQC. Set to be the first in a completely new family of electric vehicles, the new GLC with EQ Technology aims to blend traditional Mercedes elegance with a cutting-edge electric drive system and highly intuitive software.
With customer deliveries penned to begin in mid-2026, the new model enters the highly competitive premium EV market with a formidable set of specifications. At launch, the sole configuration available will be the GLC 400 4MATIC, which boasts a combined 489hp, all-wheel drive, and a remarkable WLTP range of up to 406 miles.
Prices for this initial offering start at £60,350 for the generously equipped ‘Sport' specification, positioning it as a direct challenger to established rivals.
The Electric Heart: Performance and Platform
The new GLC is not merely an electrified version of its combustion counterpart; it is a ground-up EV built to set “new standards in its class for design, value, versatility and space”.
The launch-spec GLC 400 4MATIC achieves its 489hp output by combining two powerful electric drive units, one mounted on each axle for a fully variable all-wheel drive system. Mercedes has engineered this system for maximum efficiency. The primary rear electric drive unit (EDU) cleverly incorporates a two-speed transmission, a feature designed to benefit both standing-start acceleration and high-speed driving efficiency.
Meanwhile, the front axle is fitted with a disconnect unit (DCU). This allows the front motor to be almost instantly disengaged when not required—such as during steady-state cruising—to reduce parasitic drag and boost real-world range, re-engaging seamlessly when traction or power is demanded.
This potent setup translates to impressive performance figures. The GLC 400 4MATIC can accelerate from a standstill to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds and will continue to a top speed of 130mph. While this is the only powertrain offered at launch, Mercedes has confirmed that additional drive and battery configurations will be made available in the future.
Charging, Range, and Deep-Dive Efficiency
Underpinning the GLC 400 4MATIC is a latest-generation high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a usable energy content of 94kWh. This advanced battery is the key to the model's headline range of up to 406 WLTP miles in UK specification.
When it comes to recharging, the GLC is built on an 800-volt architecture, enabling exceptionally fast DC charging speeds of up to 330kW at compatible high-power stations. For added flexibility, a DC converter is equipped as standard to allow for efficient charging at more common 400-volt stations.
For AC charging at home or at public destinations, an 11kW onboard charger is standard, with a more powerful 22kW AC charging system available as an option.
Mercedes-Benz has also integrated a suite of efficiency-enhancing technologies as standard. A multi-source heat pump is included to manage cabin and battery thermal conditioning with minimal energy draw.

Perhaps most impressively, the electric GLC features a new ‘One-Box' braking system. This single module, which combines the brake booster, master cylinder, and ESP control unit, is designed to perfectly blend regenerative and hydraulic braking for a “consistent and confident pedal feel” — a common pain point in many EVs.
The braking system heavily prioritises energy recovery. Mercedes states that almost all braking is carried out purely by recuperation, which can operate at a powerful peak of around 300kW. In the strongest of the four selectable recuperation levels, D-, the vehicle decelerates so effectively that the hydraulic brake system is reportedly not needed in over 99 percent of cases, allowing for true one-pedal driving and maximum energy return to the battery.
Dynamics and Digital Chassis
To manage its performance and deliver signature Mercedes comfort, the electric GLC can be specified with an optional ‘Refinement Package'. This bundles AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent control and rear-axle steering.
The AIRMATIC system is more than just air springs; it's a predictive system. Using a new Car-to-X function, the car can receive real-time, anonymised data from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles further up the road via the Cloud, allowing the damping to be electrically adjusted before it hits a pothole or rough patch. Furthermore, the system uses Google Maps data to keep the GLC's ride height as low as possible for as long as possible, reducing aerodynamic drag and conserving energy. The driver can also manually raise the ride height, a function that, for the first time, can be controlled by voice command.
The optional rear-axle steering, with up to 4.5 degrees of articulation, dramatically enhances manoeuvrability. It reduces the turning circle by a substantial 90 centimetres. At speeds below 37 mph, the rear wheels steer opposite to the front wheels for nimble, agile handling in city streets and car parks. Above 37 mph, they turn by up to 2.5 degrees in the same direction as the front wheels, virtually lengthening the wheelbase to deliver enhanced high-speed stability during lane changes or sudden evasive manoeuvres.
Standard safety kit is comprehensive, including PRE-SAFE®, Distance Assist DISTRONIC (adaptive cruise), Blind Spot Assist, and Active Lane Keeping Assist. An available ‘Digital Extra', MB.DRIVE ASSIST, enhances the system to state-of-the-art SAE Level 2 automated driving by adding Steering Assist and Lane Change Assist.
A New Digital Experience: MB.OS and Hyperscreen
The electric GLC debuts the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This liquid-cooled, high-performance brain — boasting chips capable of 254 trillion operations per second (TOPS) — integrates and controls every facet of the vehicle, from infotainment and automated driving to comfort and charging strategies.
At its core is advanced artificial intelligence, enabling the vehicle to learn driver preferences, adapt to conditions, and make real-time decisions. Mercedes describes it as an “intelligent companion that thinks, learns and evolves with its driver”.
This new OS is presented on a new generation of screens. As standard, the GLC is equipped with the MBUX SUPERSCREEN. This sweeping glass surface integrates three separate displays: a 10.3-inch instrument cluster, a 14-inch central display, and a 14-inch passenger display.
On the entry-level Sport specification, this passenger display serves as a “digital decorative element” where a personal photo or one of 12 predefined images can be shown. From the AMG Line specification upwards, this display becomes fully functional, allowing the front passenger to interact with media and other functions.
For those who want the ultimate digital dashboard, the MBUX HYPERSCREEN is equipped from the AMG Line Premium specification upwards. This is the largest display ever fitted to a Mercedes-Benz, a single, seamless 39.1-inch glass panel with a high-resolution matrix backlight for exceptional clarity.
Space, Practicality, and Utility
The dedicated EV platform affords the electric GLC impressive interior space. Its wheelbase is 84 mm longer than its combustion sibling, translating directly into occupant comfort. Passengers benefit from 46 mm more headroom in the front and 17 mm in the rear, while legroom is expanded by 13 mm in the front and a generous 47 mm in the rear.
Practicality, a key purchasing factor in this segment, is also a strong point. The boot provides 520 litres of capacity up to the tonneau cover. With the rear seats folded down, this expands to 1,690 litres. Crucially for an EV, the electric GLC also features a frunk (front trunk) under the bonnet, adding an extra 128 litres of load capacity, perfect for storing charging cables or smaller bags.

For added utility, the GLC can be specified with a trailer coupling. It boasts a maximum towing capacity of 2.4 tonnes (braked), supported by ESP trailer stabilisation, making it a capable tow vehicle. A 100 kg drawbar load also allows for the easy transport of electric bicycles on a suitable carrier.
Redefining Design and Material Choice
The electric GLC is the first production Mercedes-Benz to feature the brand's redesigned “brand-defining chrome grille”. The press release describes this as an evolution of an iconic design element from a functional cooling grille into a “high-tech artwork”. It features a smoked-glass-look mesh structure within a wide chromed frame. From the AMG Line specification upwards, this grille is fully illuminated and animated by 942 polycarbonate backlit dots.
Inside, the cabin features a new steering wheel that notably reintroduces physical controls: a rocker switch for the speed limiter and DISTRONIC, and a roller switch for volume control.
In a first for the brand, Mercedes is offering a vegan interior certified by The Vegan Society. Available as a no-cost option on the Sport specification, this “Sustainability Package” certifies that all soft-touch surface materials — from seat upholstery and headliner to carpets and door panels — are animal-free.
The SKY CONTROL Panoramic Roof comes as standard on the entry-level Sport model. This large glass surface is divided into nine zones that can be individually switched between transparent and opaque at the touch of a button. On the top-tier AMG Line Premium Plus and Premier Edition models, 162 illuminated stars are integrated into the glass, mimicking the selected ambient lighting style.
