Mercedes Electrifies its Bestseller: The All-New GLC EV Arrives with Radical Tech and a 700km+ Range

Mercedes-Benz has pulled the covers off what could be its most important electric vehicle to date: the all-new, fully electric GLC. Aiming to convert its best-selling model line to battery power, the German marque has thrown its full technological weight behind the new SUV, equipping it with an 800-volt architecture, a claimed WLTP range of up to 713 kilometres (approx. 443 miles), and a revolutionary interior dominated by a colossal 39.1-inch Hyperscreen.

For years, the GLC has been the undisputed sales champion for Mercedes-Benz globally. Its transition to an all-electric platform, therefore, represents a critical move for the brand as it deepens its commitment to an EV-only future. The new model, built on a dedicated electric-first architecture, is not merely an electrified version of its predecessor but a ground-up reinvention designed to lead the premium midsize SUV segment.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management for Mercedes-Benz Group AG, framed the launch as a landmark moment. “The biggest product-launch programme in our company's history continues with the all-new GLC,” he stated. “We're not just introducing a new model – we're electrifying our top seller. It will feature a bold new design language, cutting-edge technology, our MB.OS operating system and performance that sparks excitement.”

Performance and Powertrain for the Electric Age

Launching in the first half of 2026, the series will be spearheaded by the potent GLC 400 4MATIC. This all-wheel-drive model boasts a peak output of 360 kW (approximately 483 bhp), enabling a brisk 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in just 4.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph).

The in-house developed electric drive unit features a permanently excited synchronous motor at the rear paired with a two-speed gearbox, a design choice aimed at balancing sharp acceleration with high-speed efficiency. A second motor on the front axle engages via a disconnect unit (DCU) when all-wheel drive is required, optimising for efficiency during steady-state cruising.

Underpinning this performance is a new 800-volt electrical architecture and a 94 kWh (usable) lithium-ion battery. The cells feature an advanced chemistry with silicon oxide anodes, contributing to a high energy density of 680 Wh/l. This advanced system allows for impressively rapid charging, with Mercedes claiming a peak DC charging rate of 330 kW. In ideal conditions, this means drivers can add up to 303 kilometres (188 miles) of range in just ten minutes. A full 10-80% charge is said to take only 22 minutes.

Furthermore, the electric GLC is equipped for the future of energy management with bidirectional charging capabilities. This will allow it to function as a mobile power source, feeding electricity back into a home (Vehicle-to-Home, V2H) or the wider grid (Vehicle-to-Grid, V2G), subject to local regulations.

A New Face and a Cabin from the Future

Visually, the electric GLC signals a new design direction for the brand. The front is defined by a bold, reinterpreted grille. Moving beyond its cooling function in the combustion era, it has been transformed into an illuminated high-tech panel. As an option, it can be specified with 942 backlit polycarbonate dots that can perform animations, creating a distinctive and futuristic light signature.

The interior, however, is where the most dramatic evolution has taken place. The cabin is dominated by the optional, all-new seamless MBUX Hyperscreen. Stretching 99.3 centimetres (39.1 inches) across the entire dashboard, it integrates the driver’s display, central infotainment, and a dedicated passenger screen under a single pane of glass. This digital centrepiece is powered by the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), described by the company as an “AI-driven superbrain.”

Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz, commented on the system's intelligence. “Our own operating system MB.OS unlocks a new dimension with the MBUX Virtual Assistant and MB.DRIVE assistance and safety systems. All easy and intuitive to use via the brilliant all-new seamless MBUX HYPERSCREEN.”

This new MBUX Virtual Assistant integrates AI from both Microsoft and Google, allowing for more complex, conversational interactions. Above, an optional SKY CONTROL panoramic roof features switchable glass that can turn from transparent to opaque across nine zones. In a truly unique touch, the roof can also be illuminated with 162 integrated stars.

Reflecting a growing trend in sustainable luxury, Mercedes is also introducing a “Vegan Package.” Certified by The Vegan Society, it ensures all interior soft-touch materials, from the ARTICO man-made leather to the carpets, are completely free of animal-derived products.

Versatility and Comfort Remain Core Tenets

Despite its high-tech focus, the GLC has not forgotten its SUV roots. The new model is more spacious than its combustion-engine sibling, with a wheelbase stretched by 84 mm. This translates to more legroom and headroom for all occupants. Luggage capacity is generous, with a 570-litre boot that expands to 1,740 litres with the rear seats folded. In a practical touch for an EV, a 128-litre front trunk, or ‘frunk', provides additional storage for charging cables or a drinks crate.

For those who tow, the GLC 400 4MATIC offers a braked towing capacity of up to 2.4 tonnes, a strong figure in the EV sector, supported by a 100 kg drawbar load suitable for carrying e-bikes.

Ride comfort and agility are handled by technologies borrowed from the flagship S-Class. The Agility & Comfort Package includes AIRMATIC air suspension with infinitely adjustable damping and rear-axle steering. The rear wheels can turn up to 4.5 degrees, reducing the turning circle by nearly a metre to 11.2 metres for enhanced urban manoeuvrability, while improving high-speed stability.

With the launch of the electric GLC, Mercedes-Benz is making a clear and powerful statement. It has taken its most popular and profitable model and equipped it with a formidable arsenal of technology, performance, and luxury features. The brand is betting that this combination of a familiar nameplate with a forward-thinking execution will not only retain its loyal customer base but also win over a new generation of EV buyers, ensuring its bestseller status for years to come.
