Subaru, the Japanese manufacturer long celebrated for its rugged, all-terrain vehicles and iconic boxer engines, has signalled its most significant step yet into the electric era. The company has pulled the covers off a formidable trio of new battery-electric SUVs destined for Europe, including the UK. The announcement, made from its European headquarters, introduces the all-new Uncharted compact SUV, the adventure-ready E-Outback, and a substantially upgraded Solterra, all built upon a newly evolved electric platform.
This strategic offensive marks a pivotal moment for the brand, aiming to translate its core values of safety, go-anywhere capability, and driver enjoyment into the age of electrification. The new models are underpinned by the e-Subaru Global Platform, an architecture engineered to deliver more power, greater driving range, and faster charging capabilities than the brand’s first-generation EV.
A key focus of the announcement was the re-engineering of Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system for the electric age. The company states the new software-managed system can intuitively and precisely adjust torque distribution between the front and rear e-axles. This promises to deliver not only the sure-footed traction expected of a Subaru in off-road or slippery conditions but also enhanced road-holding and cornering precision for a more dynamic on-road experience.
In a notable shift, however, Subaru also confirmed that its new Uncharted model will be available with single-motor, front-wheel-drive (FWD) options. This move is a clear indication of the brand's intent to broaden its appeal, offering customers alternatives that prioritise maximum range and a more accessible price point, potentially attracting buyers who may not have previously considered a Subaru.
The Newcomer: Subaru Uncharted
Leading the charge is the all-new Subaru Uncharted, the brand’s first entry into the fiercely competitive all-electric compact SUV segment. With a purposefully styled, muscular exterior and a tech-focused cabin, the Uncharted is designed to appeal to both performance enthusiasts and the brand’s traditional heartland of outdoor adventurers.
Inside, the Uncharted features a contemporary and driver-centric layout, equipped with a distinctive squared-off steering wheel, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and a large 14-inch central infotainment display. Paddle shifters are also included, likely for adjusting regenerative braking levels. Subaru is keen to emphasise the vehicle's agility, highlighting a tight turning circle of 5.5 metres and suspension tuned for a responsive driving experience. True to its heritage, it boasts a useful 210 mm of ground clearance.
Three distinct drivetrain configurations will be offered. The flagship model will feature the signature dual-motor AWD system, powered by a 77 kWh battery. This variant produces a potent 252 kW (344 PS), enabling a brisk 0-62 mph time of just 5.0 seconds and offering a driving range of up to 292 miles. It also maintains a practical towing capacity of 1500 kg.
The new FWD strategy is showcased in two further Uncharted versions. A Long-Range FWD model uses the same 77 kWh battery but, with a single motor, extends its range to an impressive 363 miles (WLTP estimated). For those prioritising cost, a standard-range FWD model will be available with a smaller 57.7 kWh battery, offering a still-respectable range of 276 miles.
Crucially for usability, all Uncharted variants will come equipped with a 22 kW on-board AC charger as standard. Coupled with battery pre-conditioning, this allows for a rapid 10-80% charge in approximately 30 minutes, even in challenging weather conditions.
The Legacy Reimagined: Subaru E-Outback
Drawing inspiration from the 30-year legacy of the Outback, the model that arguably pioneered the crossover concept, the all-new E-Outback redefines the flagship for a new generation. Known as the Trailseeker in the US market, the E-Outback name has been chosen for Europe to leverage the model’s established reputation for versatility and dependability.
The E-Outback is unambiguously built for adventure. It is equipped with a 74.7 kWh battery that powers a dual-motor system, producing a substantial 280 kW (380 PS). This allows the large SUV to accelerate from 0-62 mph in a startling 4.4 seconds, while still providing a driving range of over 279 miles.

As customers would expect, the E-Outback is fitted with Symmetrical AWD as standard, complemented by 210 mm of ground clearance and a dual-mode X-MODE terrain selection system for advanced off-road control. Towing capacity matches the Uncharted at 1500 kg. Subaru also highlights that the E-Outback is longer than the Solterra, providing a more spacious and adaptable interior with enough luggage space to comfortably accommodate four large suitcases.
Safety remains paramount, with the E-Outback fitted with a comprehensive suite of active and passive systems, including an Emergency Driving Stop system and features inspired by its renowned EyeSight driver-assist technology.
The Veteran Updated: New Subaru Solterra
Just three years after its initial launch, the Solterra SUV receives a significant mid-life refresh with comprehensive hardware and software upgrades. The dual e-axles have been boosted to produce the same 252 kW (344 PS) as the AWD Uncharted, cutting its 0-62 mph time to 5.1 seconds.

The drive battery capacity has been increased to 73.1 kWh, pushing its maximum range beyond the 310-mile mark. Further enhancements to the battery and its management system have yielded faster charging speeds, with the new Solterra now capable of a 10-80% top-up in 30 minutes, even at a chilly -10°C, thanks to pre-conditioning and an optional 22 kW AC charger. In a major boost for practicality, its towing capacity has been doubled to 1500 kg.
The refresh is completed with a design update, featuring aero-optimised front styling, a redesigned interior with a new 14-inch infotainment display, and enhanced camera support for improved all-around awareness.
A New Chapter for Subaru
This three-pronged announcement confirms that Subaru is committed to securing its future in a rapidly electrifying market. By expanding its line-up and offering a broader range of drivetrain choices, the brand is positioning itself to not only retain its loyal customer base but also attract a new wave of EV buyers.

UK drivers can expect to see the new Subaru Uncharted and the updated Solterra arriving in showrooms in early 2026, with the larger E-Outback following in the summer of 2026. Final UK specifications, model line-ups, and pricing will be confirmed closer to their respective launches.
