MG Motor UK has confirmed that its latest all-electric SUV, the MGS5 EV, will debut in Spring 2025. The announcement comes off the back of a record-breaking 2024 for the brand, which saw it secure a top ten position in UK vehicle registrations for the first time – led by the MG 4 and MG ZS.
Introducing the MGS5 EV
The MGS5 EV is set to build upon MG’s growing success in the electric vehicle market, leveraging the modular scalable platform (MSP) that underpins the award-winning MG4 EV. This platform has already been praised for its dynamic performance, efficiency, and impressive range, and its integration into the MGS5 EV is expected to deliver an enhanced driving experience in a spacious and practical SUV form.
Beyond its technical credentials, MG has confirmed that the MGS5 EV will introduce a fresh, premium cabin design, featuring advanced technology and high-end materials unique to this model. These refinements signal MG’s ambition to raise the bar within the affordable electric SUV segment.
Despite its high-tech and premium feel, MG remains committed to its core philosophy of delivering excellent value, ensuring that the MGS5 EV will be competitively positioned in the UK EV market.
David Allison, Head of Product and Planning at MG Motor UK, highlighted the significance of the launch:
“The MGS5 EV has all the credentials to impress, offering a generously equipped and spacious SUV while retaining the all-electric performance that MG customers have come to appreciate. In terms of cabin ambience and technology, this model will offer a new and greatly enhanced MG experience.”
Further details regarding the specifications, pricing, and launch availability of the MGS5 EV are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
MG’s Remarkable Performance in 2024
The unveiling of the MGS5 EV follows an exceptionally strong year for MG Motor UK. In 2024, the brand recorded its highest-ever UK sales, reaching 81,536 units. This milestone also secured MG a place in the top ten best-selling car brands in the country, with a 4.18% market share.
The MG4 EV, the brand’s flagship electric hatchback, played a crucial role in this success. According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), it was the fourth best-selling electric vehicle in the UK and ranked second among private buyers. The MG HS SUV was another standout performer, achieving 30,207 sales and securing eighth place in overall UK vehicle sales.
Another key highlight of MG’s 2024 line-up was the launch of the MG3 Hybrid+, a new hybrid supermini introduced in the spring. The model proved to be a strong addition to MG’s portfolio, amassing over 6,000 sales in its debut year.
Additionally, MG expanded its hybrid offerings with the ZS Hybrid+, a compact SUV, while also making a bold statement in the EV sports car segment with the launch of the Cyberster—a striking two-seater convertible designed at MG’s Marylebone Design Studio in London.
Reflecting on the year, Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director of MG Motor UK, stated:
“Last year saw MG make encouraging progress, with new and current products like the MG4 EV performing well among both business and private customers.”
“MG will continue to build its reputation for delivering excellent all-round value in the UK market while also introducing new models and technologies. Our goal remains to offer customers a choice of affordable petrol, hybrid, and electric vehicles that suit their individual needs.”
Looking Ahead: MG’s Plans for 2025
Building on its momentum, MG Motor UK is gearing up for an ambitious 2025 model rollout, which will see the brand further expand its line-up across multiple segments. The MGS5 EV is set to lead this charge, bringing a new level of sophistication and performance to MG’s growing EV portfolio.
With a strong combination of affordability, advanced technology, and practical design, MG’s latest SUV is expected to appeal to a wide range of UK buyers. The brand’s continued focus on innovation and value is likely to keep it on an upward trajectory in the competitive UK automotive market.
As the industry moves deeper into electrification, MG’s ability to deliver high-quality, budget-friendly EVs has positioned it as a serious contender among more established manufacturers. The success of the MG4 EV and the upcoming launch of the MGS5 EV further solidify MG’s role in shaping the future of accessible electric mobility in the UK. While the company might not have the sheer bulk of a BYD or Tesla, rapid development of both the external looks and underlying motor/in-car systems, mean that MG has secured its place in the hearts & minds of British drivers.
