The highly anticipated Salon Privé 2024 is set to showcase a groundbreaking automotive transformation as the iconic DeLorean DMC-12, now electrified by Electrogenic, takes centre stage at the prestigious event. The electrified version of this beloved 1980s supercar promises to deliver the performance its futuristic design has always hinted at, thanks to the innovative technology from the UK-based EV conversion specialists, Electrogenic.
A Revolution in the Making
The DeLorean DMC-12, famous for its starring role in the Back to the Future films, is widely recognised for its distinctive wedge-shaped body, stainless steel panelling, and gullwing doors. However, despite its visual appeal, the car’s original performance left much to be desired, largely due to its underpowered Renault V6 engine, which produced a modest 130 horsepower. The new electric conversion by Electrogenic addresses this longstanding issue, transforming the DeLorean into a vehicle worthy of its science fiction legacy.
Electrogenic’s ‘plug and play’ EV conversion kit replaces the outdated V6 engine with a 220-horsepower electric motor, coupled with a fixed-ratio gearbox. The result is a dramatic improvement in performance, with the electrified DeLorean now capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds—halving the time of the original petrol-powered version. The car’s 43kW battery pack, strategically placed for optimal weight distribution, provides over 150 miles of real-world range, with compatibility for the latest CCS rapid charging technology, allowing for swift recharges on the go.
Futuristic Features for a Futuristic Car
The Electrogenic DeLorean DMC-12 doesn’t just stop at enhanced performance. The car is also packed with modern features that elevate it beyond a simple EV conversion. It includes adjustable regenerative braking, selectable drive modes ranging from ‘Eco’ to ‘Sport’, and even launch control—marking a first for Electrogenic. Inside, the car is equipped with a bespoke virtual dashboard, displaying drive modes, battery usage, and charge status, along with touchscreen Apple CarPlay integration.
In line with its sci-fi heritage, the car boasts futuristic capabilities such as vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to power external devices like laptops or fridges, and even charge another electric vehicle. The air conditioning system has also been upgraded, ensuring comfort during those nostalgic trips back to the future.
An Unmissable Attraction at Salon Privé
Salon Privé 2024, set to take place from 28th to 31st August at Blenheim Palace, promises to be a spectacular event, with the electrified DeLorean DMC-12 as one of its star attractions. Now in its 19th year, Salon Privé is renowned as the UK’s most exclusive automotive garden party, attracting car enthusiasts and collectors from around the globe.
Electrogenic’s CEO, Steve Drummond, expressed his excitement about showcasing the electrified DeLorean at the event. “Our engineering team has been blown away by the response it gets from the public; it generates interest and excitement like nothing else. You’re constantly being stopped by DeLorean fans asking for pictures or wanting to take a closer look at the car. It’s clear that the DMC-12 holds a special place in the hearts of many.”
Salon Privé Director David Bagley echoed these sentiments, noting the DeLorean’s enduring appeal. “The world-famous DeLorean is always a huge draw, and this incredible development from Electrogenic creates arguably the finest DMC-12 ever. The engine was always its weakest link, so replacing it with a powerful, long-range electric drivetrain arguably turns it into the high-tech sci-fi car it should have been.”
Bagley also highlighted the local connection, as Electrogenic is based in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, just a short distance from Blenheim Palace. “I can’t wait to see the reaction to this fantastic development, which our guests from the UK and internationally will find fascinating.”
