In a remarkable move that looks to create a significant shift in the landscape of hypercar design and performance, Automobili Pininfarina has unveiled the B95 Barchetta, the world's first pure-electric open-top hypercar. The tech spec itself is pretty amazing, but everything starts with its breathtaking design and bespoke craftsmanship – something that the renowned automaker hopes will mark a milestone for itself and the hypercar industry as a whole.
Priced at €4.4 million, the B95 Barchetta claims to be more than just a hypercar – it’s aiming to be seen as a masterpiece that fuses timeless aesthetics with cutting-edge technology. The combination of flowing open-top bodywork and intricate technical details gives life to a modern interpretation of a classic racer, all powered by the unmatched performance of a pure-electric powertrain that is the brainchild of automotive enthusiasts at Pininfarina like Paolo Dellacha – the company's Chief Product & Engineering Officer.
At the heart of the B95's incredible performance lies a state-of-the-art powertrain, the same one that powers the acclaimed Battista hyper GT. However, the B95 features a unique tuning specific to its distinctive nature. This powerhouse electric system propels the B95 from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2 seconds, reaching a top speed of close to 190mph. That kind of speed will induce something between euphoria and fear, but at least you know that Pininfarina is a world record holder when it comes to braking.
Central to this dynamic performance is a high-capacity 120 kWh lithium-ion battery, generating an astonishing peak power of 1400 kW (1900 PS). This T-shaped battery pack, liquid-cooled for optimal performance, is ingeniously housed within a lightweight yet sturdy carbon fibre structure. The battery can be charged using DC fast chargers with speeds up to 270 kW, providing a 20-80% charge in just 25 minutes.
The exceptional power generated by the battery is channelled to the road through four independent high-performance electric motors, one for each wheel. These motors, combined with Full Torque Vectoring technology, enable five distinct driving modes:-
- Calma/Calm
- Pura/Pure
- Energica/Energetic
- Furiosa/Furious
- Carattere/Character (strong and resilient)
These modes allow drivers to tailor power delivery and handling to their preferences and driving conditions, delivering an unparalleled driving experience.
In terms of aesthetics, the B95 is a true work of art. The exterior boasts Black Exposed Signature Carbon detailing that creates a striking 3D sculptural effect against the elegant body paint. This same theme continues with carbon fibre accents around the front splitter and rear aero outlet, adding to the hypercar's visual allure.
The body's flawless multi-layered gloss finish highlights the B95's elegant silhouette, accentuated by gold metallic flakes that give the car a unique depth of colour. The colour’s appearance shifts from golden during the day to a rich bronze hue at night, creating an ever-changing visual spectacle.
The interior of the B95 is an exquisite blend of classic race car aesthetics and futuristic design elements. The dashboard, inspired by concept car designs, extends the exterior lines into the cabin, forming a seamless visual connection. Tan Sustainable Luxury Leather upholstery adorns the dashboard, while the brushed black aluminium anodized finish adds a touch of sophistication.
The seats, also finished in Tan Sustainable Luxury Leather, embrace occupants with a design reminiscent of classic race car seats. Sculpted to provide comfort and protection, the seats feature aluminium inserts that pay homage to the design ethos of the hypercar.
Automobili Pininfarina's commitment to exclusivity is evident in the bespoke options available for collectors ordering the B95. Each of the ten examples produced will be meticulously curated to the client's specifications, ensuring that no two cars are alike. The laser-engraved aluminium door plates, visible upon entering and exiting the car, add an extra touch of elegance and theatre to the experience.
Paolo Dellachà, CEO of Automobili Pininfarina, expressed his excitement for the new chapter the B95 ushers in: “B95 delivers the power of Battista and yet creates a new dimension of driving experience, redefining the very joy of driving. It is the first of a new kind, an object of desire that introduces the thrill of exceptional, electrified performance in stunning open-top form.”
The B95 Barchetta marks a milestone not only for Automobili Pininfarina but for the entire automotive industry. With its unparalleled blend of classic design and cutting-edge technology, the B95 promises to redefine the boundaries of hypercar performance and luxury. Handcrafted and exclusive, it is set to make its mark on the roads in 2025, commemorating the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina SpA. The era of electric hyper performance has arrived, and it's wearing the nameplate “Automobili Pininfarina B95.”
As well as creating its own works of art, the company also provides a range of e-mobility services for other companies. If you wanted to bring your own EV dream to market, might be worth giving them a shout.
