MG Motor UK has taken another leap in the world of electric vehicles with the introduction of its latest offering, the MG4 EV Extended Range hatchback. With a range of up to 323 miles on a single charge (WLTP), this latest addition to MG's popular line up of affordable electric vehicles not only offers additional range, but also more performance and prices starting from just £36,495. This new addition to the MG line-up certainly keeps up the pressure on MG's rivals in this space, but will it be enough to convince VW and Kia customers to move over?
The centrepiece of the MG4 EV Extended Range is its cutting-edge 77kWh battery. MG claims that this is a technological achievement which will help re-position the MG4 in a different class of cars – where MG will have a big price advantage. The ability to hit 323 miles in perfect conditions, certainly makes the idea of a London to Manchester drive with one charge a distinct possibility.
Having arrived at your destination, this updated MG4 can pull an 80% charge in 39 minutes. Potentially bringing your range back up over 250 miles in the time it takes for an extended garage break during long journeys. To put this into context, the new MG4 offers close to double the range of MG's first EV launched in the UK back in 2019. Doubling the range in 4 years, gives you an idea of just how far MG has come in such a short space of time. Part of that will have been technological development, but a large part would have come from an understanding of what its customers want – and the features that they value.
While the bigger battery takes care of the extended range, the addition of a new 180kW motor means that this MG4 variant will also deliver much better performance (in places where the speed cams allow).
The MG4 EV Extended Range will hit 60 mph from a standing start in just under 6.5 seconds. Improving both efficiency, range and performance in one ‘evolution' is a pretty impressive combination.
a 0-60mph acceleration time of just 6.5 seconds, underlining its status as a driver's car that combines efficiency with exhilaration. To get that kind of performance with old school fossil fuel cars would have required something like a Jaguar XF SE – and the new MG4 would leave a 520D BMW for dead. If that kind of thing interests you.
Our review of the long range version of the MG4 has attracted over 200,000 views. In fact, all of the MG reviews we have completed, have been really popular with the WhichEV audience. It shows that while the headlines tend to be grabbed by EVs costing significantly more than £50,000 – there is an underlying need for practical solutions in a financially challenged world.
The MG4 EV Extended Range model upholds the MG4 EV's reputation for being a driver's delight. Built on the established rear-wheel drive layout and Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), this new iteration retains the remarkable comfort and dynamic handling that has made the MG4 EV a standout choice in the EV market.
One standout feature of the MG4 EV Extended Range is its inclusion of the Trophy specification as standard. This means that the spacious interior, advanced infotainment systems, and cutting-edge driver-assistance technologies that customers have come to expect from MG are all part of the package.
The exterior design of the MG4 EV Extended Range has also received a touch of elegance, with larger 18″ alloy wheels and a sleek black two-tone roof enhancing its visual appeal. These design elements work harmoniously with the car's bold and contemporary aesthetics.
When testing the company's various electric vehicles, we've found it useful that they focus on a simple implementation of Apple Car Play and Android Auto. It means that there is little ‘up time' in learning how to get the most form your new infotainment system.
Guy Pigounakis, MG's Commercial Director, expressed his enthusiasm for the new model, stating, “The Extended Range is the fifth model in the award-winning MG4 EV model family, and we believe drivers have real breadth of choice with our electric hatchbacks which now include the very capable SE cars all the way through to the XPOWER, the most powerful production MG ever built.”
The history of MG dates back to 1924, and the brand has always been synonymous with sporty, innovative, and value-driven cars. From their iconic MG 14/28 Super Sports car to the all-electric MG4 EV of today, MG has maintained its commitment to innovation and excitement.
MG's presence in the UK has been steadily growing and its impact in the EV market has been significant. MG has become a refence point for value when considering an electric vehicles – in the same way that Tesla is the yardstick for performance.
All new MG vehicles are backed by a 7-year manufacturer's warranty – and with a network of over 150 dealerships across the UK, MG ensures that its products are easily accessible to customers with professional sales and after-sales support.
With this latest addition to their line-up, MG continues to make waves in the electric vehicle market, embodying their ‘Get More' philosophy by offering a vehicle that combines extended range with affordability and style.
