Volta Trucks’ first fully electric truck, the Volta Zero, has rolled out of the company’s contract production plant in Steyr, Austria.

The 16-tonne commercial vehicle is the first of a series of second-generation ‘Production Verification’ prototypes, which will be loaned to customers for extended periods in late 2022 and early 2023.

The prototypes will form part of the Pilot Fleet of trucks allowing the electric commercial vehicle startup to understand Volta Zero’s market positioning as the first fully electric medium-duty commercial vehicle.

“This first vehicle rolling off the line at our manufacturing plant in Steyr is the latest significant milestone on the Volta Trucks journey towards the start of production of customers’ vehicles,” said Kjell Walöen, co-founder of Volta Trucks.

The company’s manufacturing is run by Steyr Automotive, which has reserved a capacity of 14,000 vehicles per year for Volta Trucks. The company claims that the manufacturing of Volta Trucks will create over 2,000 jobs including the ones within the supply chain.

“Their (SteyrAutomotive) team has used generations of premium truck-building experience to deliver the first Volta Zero off the production line on time, and to the highest quality standards,” Walöen added.
