Volkswagen has reported a 27% year-on-year increase in its electric-car deliveries during the first half of 2022.
Despite the supply bottlenecks due to the production halt in Europe and lockdown in China, the German automaker sold 217,000 EVs in the first six months of 2022, up from 170,000 during the same period last year.
“We successfully continued our electric ramp-up despite challenging conditions, especially in the second quarter,” said Hildegard Wortmann, Group Board Member Sales at Volkswagen. “Demand continues to be strong and we expect an improving supply situation in the second half of the year.”
In terms of deliveries by region, Volkswagen sold 128,000 vehicles in Europe and 63,500 vehicles in China, making the Asian market its biggest growth driver with more than three times the increase in sales as compared to the prior-year period. The EV’s share of total deliveries reached a level of 5.6%, up from 3.4% in the first half of 2021, the company said.
By the end of June, the core brand Volkswagen delivered 115,900 EVs to customers (share of Group total: 53%). This was followed by Audi with 50,000 vehicles (23%), ŠKODA with 22,200 vehicles (10%), Porsche with 18,900 vehicles (9%), and SEAT/CUPRA with 8,300 vehicles (4%).
“We are working intensively to reduce the high order bank and the delivery times for our customers and are committed to our goal of a BEV (battery-powered electric vehicle) share of 7 to 8% for the full year,” Wortmann added.
