The Volkswagen Group has recorded a 65% increase of electric vehicle deliveries in the first quarter of 2022 compared to Q1 2021.
Despite a global shortage of semiconductors, a total of 99,100 BEVs were sold globally by the end of March, up from 60,000 in the first quarter of the previous year.
The biggest increase was in China where 28,800 units rolled off the production line, a more than four-fold increase versus the prior-year period.
By region, Europe had the most BEV deliveries with 58,400 in Q1 representing a 59% share, while 7,900 units were sold in the USA and 4,000 units were sold in the ‘Rest of World’.
By the end of March, the core VW brand delivered 53,400 BEVs to customers, a 54% share. Audi came second with 24,200 units (24% share) and Porsche was third with 9,500 vehicles (10% share).
Hildegard Wortmann, group board member for sales, said: “Demand for our all-electric vehicles is very high worldwide and our order books are thus well filled. The increase in BEV deliveries would have been significantly higher had it not been for the current supply bottlenecks. We are counting on additional highly attractive models and a successive improvement of the semiconductor situation to provide additional tailwind as the year progresses. We continue to have our sights firmly set on a BEV share of 7 to 8% for the full year.”
