StoreDot hits 1200 cycle EV battery milestone

Battery pioneer StoreDot has become the first company in the world to produce silicon dominant extreme fast charging cells capable of more than 1,000 cycles.

The StoreDot team, using a specially designed testing form factor, has now exceeded 1,200 cycles with cells that are taken to 80% charge in 15 minutes and then discharged for one hour.

When a lithium battery is charged and discharged once, it is called a cycle. Each time you charge these batteries, their capacity degrades. A battery's “first life” is typically considered over when its capacity falls below 80% and so creating cells that can charge for 1,200 cycles, while maintaining the industry standard is a “hugely significant achievement”, said StoreDot.

Yaron Fein, StoreDot vice president of R&D, said: “I’m hugely proud of our recent achievement. 1200 consecutive cycles of extreme fast charging is a critical milestone that would have been unimaginable just two years ago. This is not only testament to the skill and dedication of StoreDot’s world-leading team, but it reaffirms our roadmap of delivering ‘100in5’ cells for global automotive manufacturers within two years, and creating batteries that will transform the experience of electric vehicle drivers by eradicating their charging and range anxieties.”

StoreDot recently shared its technology roadmap with its first goal being to produce silicon-dominant cells capable of delivering 100 miles of range on a five-minute charge – ‘100in5’.

By 2032, it is hoping to deliver 100 miles of range in just two minutes of charge.

For now, though, the Israeli-based firm is moving on to B-samples using larger form factors that will be shipped to global automotive manufacturers later this year for testing in future EVs.
