Money.co.uk has launched the new EV University League, which ranks over 100 UK universities on their commitment to sustainable transportation and electric vehicle infrastructure.
Over a period of two months, money.co.uk submitted Freedom of Information requests to 130 UK universities, asking them about their current infrastructure for EV vehicles and sustainable transport.
The results show that 30 institutions have truly embraced the all-electric revolution. The study ranked 101 universities based on four simple questions: Does the university provide any electric vehicle charging for either staff, fleet, or students? Is the charging of electric vehicles free? Is the ratio of EV charging to total car parking spaces 1:100 or greater? Is the ratio of bicycle spaces to car parking spaces 2:1 or greater?
For each benchmark passed the universities scored one point out of a maximum of four total points, earning them a spot in the A+ league and only 10 universities in the whole country were able to score full marks.
However, the study has also highlighted that while collectively UK universities make up 148,530 parking spaces, across all universities there are just 1,022 EV charging points, with 20% of universities providing no facilities for EV charging at all.
Although there is still a lot of work to be done in order to be ready for the all-electric revolution, this is a positive starting point for universities, according to Salman Haqqi of money.co.uk who has launched the league.
“Across the board, it’s encouraging to see so many universities taking active steps towards sustainable transport infrastructure by installing EV charging points or offering adequate bike facilities,” he said. “The universities at the top of the league tables represent the most commitment to eco-friendly transportation, with the very best offering large amounts of free EV charging and ample bike facilities.”
